About the MWHDA

About the Association
The Mt. Waddington Highland Dancing Association was formed in 2009 in order to support the sport of highland dancing on Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.  The MWHDA membership includes the families of dancers from around the North Island, which can include: Port McNeill, Port Hardy, Port Alice, Woss, Sointula, Alert Bay, and beyond.
Dancers from Northern Vancouver Island may train for either competitive or recreational dance, and many take exams through the Scottish Dance Teachers Association.  There are over 50 active dancers in our area, ranging in age from 3 - 'over 40'. Many of our dancers travel around Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and North America to compete.
Dancers also participate in many community events in the North Island, including Filomi Days, Orcafest, the Fall Fair,
Robbie Burns dinners, and much more.  If you would like to have highland dancers participate in your event please contact us.

The MWHDA annual Highland Dancing competition is sanctioned through Scotdance Canada, and is held every year in the fall, alternating yearly between Port Hardy and Port McNeill.

Celtic Christmas

The MWHDA holds a major show/fundraiser each year at the beginning of December called Celtic Christmas.  It has been an annual event since 2006 on the North Island, with performances in Port Hardy and Port McNeill. Dancers perform standard highland and national dances as well as choreographies.  This event is the major annual fundraiser for the Association, and all of the families of North Island dancers who participate in the Association are expected to get involved in the organization of the event.

Annual MWHDA General Meeting and Picnic

The annual MWHDA Annual General Meeting and family picnic is held annually in June.  All North Island dance families who are members of the Association are invited and encouraged to participate in the picnic.
